Fifty years ago tonight, Apollo 11 astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped from the Apollo 11 Module Eagle onto the lunar surface, not only marking “one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind,” but putting the Omega Speedmaster into the annals of history as the first wristwatch worn on the moon. Omega’s year-long celebration of this milestone has now culminated in the announcement of a new special edition of the iconic “Moonwatch”, Omega Limited-Edition Speedmaster Apollo 11 50th Anniversary watch replica.
Marking the golden anniversary of the OMEGA watch that was gifted to astronauts in 1969 to celebrate the first moon landing, this Omega Speedmaster replica limited to 1,014 pieces, driven by the manual-winding OMEGA Master Chronometer Calibre 3861.
18K Moonshine™ gold has been used to create this commemorative timepiece. The vertically brushed step dial, also in 18K Moonshine™ gold, includes facetted onyx hour markers. Inspired by the piece of 1969, a few touches of burgundy have been added, including the ceramic bezel ring, the markings on the caseback and the movement.
The inner decorative caseback ring, crafted from 18K Moonshine™ gold and blackened, features a partial world map of the American continent and a domed lunar meteorite inlay, representing the true proportions of the Earth and the Moon.
The second watch, Omega Speedmaster 50th Anniversary Apollo 11 stainless steel watch replica, created in honor of the 50th anniversary. It features a 42 mm case with a polished 18K Moonshine™ Gold bezel. The dial is slate gray with gold accents and black outer chapter ring for the minutes. It uses Moonshine gold for the vintage Omega logo and indexes. In the chronograph subdial at 9:00, there is an engraving of the lunar landing. The caseback of this watch features a partial footprint on a black moon surface-like plate with the famous words spoken by Armstrong when he stepped onto the moon’s surface: “That’s One Small Step For A Man, One Giant Leap For Mankind.”
The watch is presented on a polished-brushed metallic bracelet and comes with an additional Velcro strap with black-coated cork. Inside, it is powered by the OMEGA Master Chronometer Calibre 3861.
This version, which retails for $9,650, is being built in a limited edition of 6,969 pieces. It is presented in an astronaut kit box with a small moon landing module and two mission patches that honor the 50th anniversary of this monumental event.
Omega Speedmaster 50th Anniversary replica in Moonshine™ gold
The Omega Speedmaster 50th Anniversary Apollo 11 replica version 310.60.42.50.99.001 that replicates the watch given to the astronauts in 1969 is built in 18-karat Moonshine™ gold. The gold is an alloy and—while yellow in hue—actually is toned down a bit and has an almost white cast to it to emulate the white/yellow shimmer of the moon. The watch features a burgundy bezel like the original, however, it is created of ceramic with Omega’s proprietary Ceragold™ for the tachymeter scale. It’s caseback bears the 50th anniversary dates: 1969-2019, and the words “The first watch worn on the moon.” Thanks to a double laser engraving process, there is a tiny plaque that depicts America as seen from space. Just 1,014 pieces will be made, each retailing for $34,600.Marking the golden anniversary of the OMEGA watch that was gifted to astronauts in 1969 to celebrate the first moon landing, this Omega Speedmaster replica limited to 1,014 pieces, driven by the manual-winding OMEGA Master Chronometer Calibre 3861.
